KALBELIYA DANCE

The kaalbeliya tribe of Rajasthan are snake charmers. Kaal means death and belia means charmer or player. The people who play with death are known as Kaalbeliya. The popularity of this dance is so much world wide that Rajasthan Kaalbeliya dance and songs are now in UNESCO’s representative list of Intangible cultural heritage of humanity the year 2010. In kaalbeliya dance, male’s play various traditional instruments and females perform a dance.

kaalbeliya dance is a traditional folk dance form that originated in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is performed by the kaalbeliya community, a nomadic group of people who were traditionally snake charmers, and the dance form is closely linked with their way of life and cultural traditions.

The kaalbeliya dance is characterized by its graceful and fluid movements, as well as its colorful costumes and lively music. The dancers wear traditional attire, which includes long, flowing skirts, tight-fitting bodices, and heavy jewelry. The skirts are decorated with small mirrors and colorful embroidery, which adds to the visual appeal of the dance.

The music for the Kalbelia dance is provided by a variety of instruments, including the dholak (a double-headed drum), the been (a wind instrument), and the khartal (a percussion instrument made of wood). The dance is performed to the accompaniment of these instruments, and the rhythm of the music drives the movements of the dancers.

One of the unique aspects of the kaalbeliya dance is its connection to snakes. The kaalbeliya community has a long tradition of catching and training snakes, and the dance incorporates movements that mimic the slithering and twisting of these animals. The dancers often wear live snakes around their necks or in their hands, and their movements are intended to invoke the power and grace of the serpent.

As the kaalbeliya dance has gained popularity outside of Rajasthan, it has become an important part of India’s cultural heritage. It is now performed at festivals and events throughout the country and has even been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
